The BeTTER Jobs Programme is a support programme created by the Ministry of Education that allows eligible schools to consider more beginner and returning teachers for vacancies, while getting teachers into classrooms faster.

The programme matches beginning or returning teachers with schools identified as having recruitment or retention challenges. It helps teachers find a job by notifying them weekly about vacancies at schools in areas they are interested in working.

Eligibility

There’s still time to be part of the programme for 2024. Teachers must have completed an Initial Teacher Education (ITE) qualification or a Teacher Education Refresh (TER) programme since 1 January 2023 and their ‘matched’ job must be their first teaching position since then.

Positions must be at least 0.8 FTTE at a state or state-integrated kura | school eligible for the BeTTER Jobs Programme.

Financial support

Teachers who find employment through the BeTTER Jobs Programme can receive $5,000 per year for up to two years. Participating schools also receive a grant per year for mentoring and induction costs associated with employing beginner or returning teachers.

After the BeTTER Jobs Programme, beginning teachers may also be eligible for the Voluntary Bonding Scheme (VBS).

Places

There are 130 places for 2024, filled on a first come, first served basis. Schools may have more than one teacher in the programme.

If you already have a new job

Teachers who have already been appointed since 1 December 2023 and think they could be in the scheme, can use this form to check eligibility and next steps.
