How do I apply for an ESL account?

What to do

New Zealand graduate or new overseas-trained teacher

You will need create an Education Sector Logon (ESL). To create an ESL please use the Ministry of Education's self-registration process.

Early childhood education (ECE)

If you are a registered teacher, ask your centre's ESL Delegated Authoriser to help you apply for an ESL account. If your centre manager needs to become an ESL Delegated Authoriser, they can call the Ministry of Education (MOE) Service Desk on 0800 422 599 for further advice. 

Kura or school

Please see your kura or school ESL Delegated Authoriser who will help you apply for an ESL account.

Limited Authority to Teach (LAT)

Contact the principal of the kura or school you are going to teach in and ask for the  Delegated Authoriser. The Delegated Authoriser will be able to send you an invite to create an Education Sector Logon (ESL) account. Once you have an ESL username and password, use it to log into Hapori Matatū. 

Tertiary

If you are a registered teacher working in tertiary education, please fill in the ESL 120 form on the Ministry of Education website.

Not currently teaching or a day-to-day reliever

If you are not currently teaching at a kura, school, ECE centre, ITE provider or other approved setting or are a day-to-day relief teacher you can you can email enquiries@teachingcouncil.nz with your full name, registration number and date of birth.

Are teachers with an ESL account automatically given access to Hapori Matatū?

Registered teachers who have an existing ESL account are automatically given access to Hapori Matatū.

I already have an ESL account but I cannot remember my login details and cannot access my ESL Account, what should I do?

Please use either the forgotten username or forgotten password button on the login page for Hapori Matatū.

I no longer have access to the email address associated to my ESL account, what should I do?

Your ESL is associated to an email address that you provided when you set up your ESL. Hapori Matatū uses the email address to send notifications regarding registration and certification, endorsement, extensions and mandatory, complaint or and self-reporting reports.

If you no longer have access to your email address please contact the Ministry of Education, Education Service Desk - 0800 422 599 or email Service.desk@education.govt.nz to confirm who you are so they can add a new email address to your ESL account. You will then be able to reset your password yourself.

Who do I talk to if I am a professional leader and I need help with my ESL and/or getting the right ESL Hapori Matatū roles added to my ESL account?

You need to be given the Hapori Matatū ‘Professional leader ‘role for endorsing applications in Hapori Matatū, as well as having the ‘Teacher’ role which you will require for creating your own applications.

Most professional leaders have automatically had their ESL role updated by the Ministry of Education to ensure the correct role is available to endorse in Hapori Matatū.

No further action is required unless, when you are logged in, the endorsement functionality is not available. If the function is not available, or if you need to have you ESL account updated, please refer to your setting below:

Early childhood education (ECE)

Please contact MOE's Education Service Desk on 0800 422 599 for further advice. Professional leaders who already have an ESL account need to ensure it includes the Professional Leader role.

Kura or school

Please see your ESL Delegated Authoriser to have roles added to your existing ESL account.

Tertiary

Please complete the ESL120 form on the Ministry of Education website. Once completed please get the form authorised by your Delegated Authoriser and send the form back to the Education Service Desk to provision to update your existing ESL account or create an ESL account.

Professional leaders who are not registered teachers

Professional leaders who are not registered teachers currently cannot log in to Hapori Matatū to complete teacher endorsements or verification of identity.  We are working towards allowing access however in the interim professional leaders can either:

Do ESL accounts get deactivated for any reason? If so, do teachers need to go through the normal ESL request process again?

Yes. ESL accounts can get disabled if a Delegated Authoriser (DA) requests it or if the account has been inactive for more than 18 months. If your account is disabled, and you want to link your current access with your disabled ESL account, you need to contact the Ministry of Education Service Desk: 0800 422 599 or email Service.desk@education.govt.nz to enable it - you will need to know your disabled account username.
