Kaiako | teachers and leaders across Aotearoa - we stand with you.

The Teaching Council is proud to launch ’Teaching shapes what matters most’, a national message that challenges outdated views of teaching and celebrates the deep expertise, skill, and impact that define your work.

Our research shows that while parents, whānau, and society say they value teaching, it’s still too often seen as low-status, low-skilled, and centred on care. But you know, and we know, that teaching is so much more than that.

We’re moving beyond the stereotypes. This message shows teaching in a new light. It’s not just about what you teach — it’s how. Every moment you spark curiosity, build resilience, and shape the neural connections that support lifelong learning. That’s not magic. That’s teaching.

When New Zealanders truly recognise the expertise of teaching, everyone benefits — learners, whānau, communities, and the future of Aotearoa.

This work is one part of our wider commitment to ‘Strengthen the mana of teaching, so teachers can change lives’.

We’re proud to stand beside you. This is for you and because of you!
