Strategic plan summary

Earlier this year the Teaching Council consulted on a new Strategic Plan that was designed to focus on the big strategic issues that we need to focus on to improve our work with and for the profession. The Governing Council has now approved and published the Strategic Plan 2024-2029.

The Strategic Plan sets out the vision and five strategic priorities of the Teaching Council for the next five years.   

The vision  

“Strengthening the mana of teaching, so teachers can change lives”  

The vision is intended to zero in on our key role, and the reason teachers teach.  

The five strategic priorities are: 

  1. Supporting teachers to manage current and emerging challenges in teaching.  
  2. Proudly communicating the value and expertise of teachers as professionals. 
  3. Growing the leadership capabilities of all teachers.  
  4. Supporting principals and ECE leaders to lead organisations.  
  5. Building partnerships to reflect and embody our Tangata Tiriti responsibilities in our organisation

The priorities are aspirational and reflect areas where the Teaching Council wants to focus its attention to achieve a shift or lift in how it works with and for the profession, and this will be reflected in the development of the Teaching Council’s business plan.  

The consultation  

We received over 2500 online submissions from the profession and five group submissions were received from NZEI | Te Rui Roa, PPTA | Te Wehangarua, Te Rito Maioha | Early Childhood New Zealand, Careers and Transition Education Association, and the Faculty of Education at the University of Canterbury. Together these responses represent a significant proportion of the profession. In addition, a private research company surveyed the public using ‘citizen panels’ to ask 500 members of the public the same set of questions.

Overall, there were high levels of support for the vision statement and the five strategic priorities from both the profession and the public. More information on the consultation submissions is available in this document on our website. 

A review of the new Strategic Plan will take place by the end of June 2027 to determine if the vision and priorities remain appropriate or need updating.
