The Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand | Matatū Aotearoa is pleased to present Our path to the future: Strategic Plan 2022-2027. The new plan is an update of the previous strategic plan published in 2019, with some minor changes to the details of our goals and priorities.

Matatū Aotearoa is responsible under legislation for ensuring high quality teaching, safe and equitable learning outcomes for ākonga | learners, and raising the status of the teaching profession.

At least every three years, we must consult with the teaching profession and other relevant parties to develop a plan setting out a five-year strategic plan.

Our initial review of the previous plan was that the vision, goals, and priorities were still mostly fit-for-purpose, and the actions and activities remained relevant and appropriate. You can read about our progress towards the goals in our 2021 Annual Report.

We were also acutely aware of the stress the profession has faced over the last few years and prioritised continuity and consolidation over change.

Consultation with the teaching profession, key stakeholders, and peak bodies largely endorsed this approach.

We therefore refreshed the previous plan, making minor amendments where some projects might have been completed, where new activities should be undertaken, or adding emphasis or clarification to particular points. While it has been a light-touch review, we believe the changes make it clearer and stronger.

We are especially proud of the development of Te Whare o Te Matatū—the house of the teaching profession, which sits alongside the Strategic Plan. The whare represents the place for all members of the teaching profession to share, learn, support, and strengthen their individual and collective skills.  The pou that hold up the whare reflect our values | uara, and the Strategic Plan finds expression within the whare.

The newly appointed governance body (Council) will soon take on responsibility for overseeing the ongoing implementation of this Strategic Plan and will undertake its own review as appropriate within the next three years.
