A new series in the Rauhuia: Terenga Huihuinga | Symposia Series ‘Navigating the professional realm of generative artificial intelligence for teachers’ began on 30 July. The first of three symposia in the series titled, ‘Empowering teachers: Dive into generative AI’ saw guest speakers, Claire Amos and Klaris Philipson delve into the world of generative AI and look at its potential impacts for teachers. The next symposium in the series will be, ‘Applying Generative AI Technologies with Professional Expertise.’ Our guest speakers will be Dr Karaitiana Taiuru and Ruth Marua Murray. You can register for the event here.

Dr Taiuru is a leading authority and a highly accomplished visionary Māori technology ethicist specialising in Māori rights with AI, Māori data sovereignty, and governance with emerging digital technologies and biological sciences. He brings extensive expertise in mātauranga, tikanga Māori, te Tiriti and advocacy for digital Māori rights, and a profound understanding of the intersection between Māori knowledge and emerging technologies.

Ruth Marua Murray graduated in 1992 with a Diploma of Teaching - Early Childhood Education. She has held various Teaching roles throughout NZ, Australia, the UK as well as a time lecturing for NZ Tertiary College. Ruth will speak on how in an increasingly generative AI-orientated world, how are we leading in this space within our sphere of influence? What are the ethical considerations we need to be aware of when implementing and using generative AI? How are we training and supporting kaiako | teachers to be cognisant of these? What considerations are we giving to ensuring equitable outcomes for current and future generations? Ruth will share from her ongoing journey of learning and experience with this within an early childhood context.
