We recognise there is a shortage of registered teachers who are speakers of Pacific languages. An appropriate level of English language competency will remain a requirement while we also recognise the skills required to work in a Pacific language and culture centre or classroom. We’re also aware that current language competency requirements may be a barrier to increasing the numbers of such teachers here in Aotearoa New Zealand. To help remedy this, we are considering changes to the Language Competency for Teaching in Aotearoa New Zealand policy. We would greatly value your feedback and suggestions on the changes that we're proposing.
We've created a page on our website where you can read both a full or summarised version of the proposed changes, as well as a two-minute survey where you can submit your feedback.
The consultation closes on Friday 10 May at 5:00pm. We look forward to hearing your thoughts and suggestions.
