Shape the ITE Programme Requirements policy

The Teaching Council is considering changes to the ITE Programme Requirements policy, and we’d really value your feedback and suggestions on the changes that we're proposing.

The government has signalled its intention to progressively change the curriculum for English medium and Māori medium schooling across the next three years. Initial Teacher Education (ITE) has an important role in adapting to and supporting curriculum and system change, and this is likely to mean a series of alterations to primary and secondary teaching programmes.

The importance of a thorough knowledge of curriculum content is already implicit in the Teaching Council’s Programme Requirements. However, the Teaching Council is consulting on changes to these Programme Requirements to provide clarity for providers about the need for change, and more specifically about what responding to key elements of the new curricula, such as structured literacy, might entail.

What will we do with your feedback?

The Teaching Council will analyse and consider your feedback before making decisions on amendments to the policy. An analysis of the submissions will be published.

Please note: In order to comply with the Official Information Act (OIA), the Teaching Council is required to consider any request to release the submissions of this consultation under the OIA. While the Teaching Council must make the final decision on what should be released under the OIA, you can let us know if there are specific reasons why you would like your feedback to remain confidential, and we will consider those reasons before making a decision on any request. Any submissions released under the OIA will be anonymised.

Te Whare o te Matatū Aotearoa | House of the Teaching Profession

All the Teaching Council’s work is underpinned by recognition of our partnership responsibilities under Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We have illustrated this using a whare metaphor, which includes a depiction of our Tiriti partnership relationship using the tukutuku panels.

Ngā Pātū o te Whare | Wall of Identity

Ngā Pātū o te Whare reminds us of our responsibilities as Tiriti partners, and the accountability we have to all communities. This includes our responsibility to (amongst other things) support the protection and revitalisation of te reo Māori as a taonga for iwi, hapū and whānau and as a language integral to our national identity. It also provides space for us to respond to needs and aspirations of different communities as these are identified.
