Element B - Co-design the cycle

Element B is about designing an annual Professional Growth Cycle with teachers.

Co-design the cycle

Element B of the professional growth cycle asks that:

Principals and professional leaders will design with teachers an annual cycle of professional growth in their setting, using the Standards or Paerewa and support teachers to engage in it, fostering an environment for inclusive, collaborative teacher learning.

While the Elements are listed from A – F, it’s important to remember that the cycle doesn’t have to be done sequentially. It may be helpful to you to consider some top principles of what you want your PGC to involve, and work your way through the other elements, before coming back to B to tie it all together into a consistent model.

We did this with the leaders of our focus group, and we have given them time to go back to their teaching settings and discuss the design with their teachers. Please check back in here for a couple of weeks to find out what they have been discussing and found to be important with Element B.

The questions we asked the focus group were few but the group were ready for them because they had already done a lot of conceptual thinking about the principles, naturally occurring evidence and the other elements that you’ll find in the section on Element A.

The leaders of our focus group are going to share what Element B looks like with the 2026 Standards, as they create them with their setting. We hope that we have given you enough resources to start the conversation. Please keep coming back to the website as we will upload their examples, as they create them.

If you would like to discuss the questions that we gave to our leaders, you can find them here. We have uploaded them as a powerpoint file so that you can edit it to use with your teachers as needed.
