Join a trusted and respected profession
By deciding to teach in NZ, you are joining the 116,356 strong profession. Within this, you must follow the standards set out in Our Code, Our Standards | Ngā Tikanga Matatika, Ngā Paerewa.
To practice as a teacher in NZ, you need hold a current practising certificate and register with the Teaching Council.
If you've received an employment offer to teach at a New Zealand school, kura or early childhood centre, let the Teaching Council know. Our priority is to have teachers able to teach when they have a definite job offer.
In New Zealand, teacher registration and certification are not sector-specific. The Teaching Council does not register teachers as early childhood, primary, or secondary teachers.
It’s up to employers to decide to if you’re the right fit for a role. If you have experience in early childhood education, employers may also check if you meet any extra requirements for funding or licensing.

Support for moving to Aotearoa
