Unteach Racism enters its next phase with new learning for your practice

14 May 2026

At the end of last year, we shared that Unteach Racism was evolving. That evolution is now live - shaped with your teaching practice and professional growth at its centre.

Until now, much of the Unteach Racism learning has taken place through the app-based modules. These have provided a private, reflective space to deepen your understanding of racism, notice your own biases, and build confidence in responding to what you see and hear in everyday school life. This learning has been focused on supporting you - your reflection, your learning, and your development as a kaiako.

That experience has now broadened.

The next phase of Unteach Racism reflects feedback from the profession and continues to focus on what matters most to teachers and leaders. The kaupapa is shifting towards professional learning grounded in a strengths-based perspective, recognising the expertise, values, and leadership you already bring to your ākonga, kura, and communities.

The new Unteach Racism modules have been developed by cultural experts Vasa Fia Collins, Diversity and Inclusion Specialist, and Whare Isaac-Sharland, Matauranga Māori Practitioner.

As part of this evolution, the new modules have been aligned to key focus areas within the 2026 Standards for the Teaching Profession. Unteach Racism now more clearly supports teachers and leaders to bring these Standards to life in everyday practice - recognising that strengthened cultural understanding supports sound professional judgement. Inclusive, respectful learning environments are shaped through reflective practice, strong relationships, and values-based leadership.

By supporting teachers to meet the Standards with clarity and confidence, Unteach Racism contributes to safer learning environments, stronger professional practice, and the trust placed in the teaching profession. From a regulatory perspective, this work reflects the Teaching Council’s role in setting clear expectations for professional practice and supporting the profession to meet the Code of Professional Responsibility. Through learning, guidance, and culturally grounded capability-building, Unteach Racism helps prevent harm, strengthens professional confidence, and supports consistent, values-based practice across the system.

This next phase also recognises the leadership that every teacher carries - in classrooms, kura, and wider communities. The focus now extends beyond individual reflection, to how discussions can be held in group settings, supporting leaders to positively influence the environments, and relationships around them and to play an active role in shaping school culture.

You can now see these changes on the Unteach Racism section of our website. A selection of resources is already available, with more being added regularly. The new modules are also accessible through My Rawa, making it easier to connect this learning with your wider professional practice.

This marks the next stage of Unteach Racism - building on the learning you’ve already done, drawing on the strengths of the profession, and supporting teachers and leaders to continue this journey together.
