Renew as a relief teacher

Whether you're a retired teacher, taking a break, or just keen to help out, here are the ways you can return to the classroom as a relief teacher.

How to renew as a relief teacher

If you're a registered teacher with an expired practising certificate and only want to do a few days of relief teaching:

  • you don’t need a current practising certificate
  • you can teach up to 20 half-days per calendar year
  • no extra steps required, just check in with your local school or kura.

If you're a registered teacher and want to return to relief teaching more often:

  • you can renew your practising certificate if you have a job offer
  • even if you haven’t taught in five years or more, you don’t need to complete a Teacher Education Refresh (TER) programme. This TER exemption is available until 31 December 2025
  • instead, you may be asked to complete a Return to Practice Plan with your principal or tumuaki.

Apply to renew your practising certificate

Which practising certificate is right for you?

You'll need to apply to renew the same practising certificate type that you currently hold or last held.

The Teaching Council's registration team will let you know if a change of category or refresh process is needed, once they've completed an initial assessment of your application.

Find information about types of practising certificates.

Already hold a practising certificate?

If you currently hold a practising certificate, you’re eligible to work as a relief teacher.

If you need to renew, you’ll need to apply for the same certificate type you last held. The Teaching Council will assess your application and let you know if a change of category or refresh process is needed.

Not a qualified teacher but still want to help?

You’ll need a Limited Authority to Teach (LAT). There are two types:

  • for people with specialist skills (e.g. music, languages)
  • for those working in roles where teachers are in short supply.

If you're a teacher aide and your school wants to employ you as a reliever, a LAT may also be an option. Your principal or tumuaki can help you apply.
