Element C - Professional learning

Element C asks every teacher to engage in professional learning that connects practice to learner outcomes.

Professional learning

Element C of the professional growth cycle asks that:

Every teacher will engage in professional learning using the Standards or Paerewa to advance their understanding of the relationship between their professional practice and outcomes for learners.

The design of Element C will depend on a number of factors:

  • what research tells you about professional learning
  • the needs of learners
  • the needs of your teachers
  • strategic priorities
  • national priorities
  • the resourcing you have and how you decide to allocate it.

Our leaders discussed some of the key things they consider when they are making decisions about how to implement Element C.

You can read more about what they said in these PDFs. To help you select which ones to read, we’ll remind you of the context of their teaching setting:

  • Glenda Koefoed is a Deputy Principal at Tauraroa Area School. They describe professional learning across sectors here
  • Liz McDowell is a Deputy Principal at Avonside Girl’s High School. They link their professional learning to whole school, individual and departmental goals. You can read more about it here
  • Ken Ward is a Regional Manager at Best Start Educare. They outline the variety of approaches to professional learning that link to strategic plans and internal evaluation. You can read more about it here
  • Lysandra Stuart is the Principal at Glenbrook School. They outline how professional learning is “intentionally collective, continuous and culturally grounded”. You can read more about it here
  • Helen Benson is a Deputy Principal at Paraparaumu College. They outline the range of professional development opportunities on offer here
  • Karl Vasau is the Principal at Rowandale School. They outline how professional learning starts with “what success looks like for our students” here
  • Jo Staite is a Deputy Principal at Cashmere Avenue School. They outline how professional learning is a mix of coaching and mentoring and other formal and informal opportunities here

Watch our leaders talk about professional learning through this Youtube playlist.

If you would like to discuss the questions that we gave to our leaders, you can find them here. We have uploaded them as a powerpoint file so that you can edit it to use with your teachers as needed.
