Meet the Governing Council
The Governing Council comprises both members elected by the profession and members appointed by the Minister of Education.
What is the Governing Council responsible for?
Our Governing Council members are responsible for ensuring our legislative functions are carried out effectively, efficiently, and in the interests of the profession and the public.
The current Council members commenced their 3-year term of appointment on 1 July 2025.

Introducing our new Governing Council members
This week we welcomed and inducted three new Governing Council members to join us after the departure of Simon Curnow, Leanne Stewart and Liam Rutherford. Each of the three new Governing Council members were runners-up in their respective sector elections last year to the three departing members.
They are:
- Helen Fouhy - Secondary Teachers Sector (replacing Simon Curnow)
- Norman Hauiti - Primary Teachers Sector (replacing Liam Rutherford)
- Virginia Oakly - Early Childhood Teachers Sector (replacing Leanne Stewart)
