Whakamanahia Te Reo Māori Project

The purpose of this project is to improve the quality of teachers in Māori-medium settings. The work is driven by the Teachers Council’s Māori Medium Advisory Group (MMAG) and has involved an environmental scan of Māori-medium Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes and a literature review of national and international research on second language acquisition.

A collaborative approach for use with student teachers has been used to develop a draft Te Reo Māori Proficiency Framework to guide exit assessments prior to their graduation from Māori-medium ITE programmes. The framework will help ITE providers to ensure their graduates are sufficiently proficient to successfully teach in Māori-medium and immersion kura/schools and early childhood settings.

The draft Te Reo Māori Proficiency Framework will be piloted by ITE staff in Māori-medium programmes throughout 2013.
